Power, Gender, and Space: Deconstructing the Social Construction of Space

Fri, March 28, 2008 | PAR 201

1:00 PM - 2:00 PM

Inspired by the ideas of Daphne Spain, Gwendolyn Wright, Doreen Massey, and other feminist geographers/sociologists/architectural theorists, this talk will look at how physical space is socially constructed and how our notions of femininity and masculinity are both reflections of and constructors of our spaces, both private and public. With examples ranging from prisons to restrooms, libraries to laboratories, and billiard room to drawing room, Dr. Hart traces a broad history of gendered constructions of space down to our present day, focusing especially on the relationship between space and power.
