Biography


Susan Mickey is an accomplished costume designer with over 25 years of professional experience in the field. In the fall of 2004, she joined the faculty at The University of Texas, Austin. She is now the associate chair and head of the production unit and the design program. Her professional credits include extensive design experiences in regional theatre, television, film and print. She brings to the classroom a working knowledge of theatres around the country having designed at The Guthrie Theatre, Hartford Stage, Arena Stage, The Huntington Theatre, Center Stage, The Goodman Theatre, Chicago Shakespeare Theatre, Cleveland Playhouse, Cincinnati Playhouse, Portland Center Stage, Pittsburgh Public Theatre, Coconut Grove Playhouse, Santa Fe Stages, Dallas Theatre Center, Studio Arena Theatre, GeVa Theatre, Milwaukee Repertory Theatre, Minneapolis Children's Theatre, Denver Center Theatre, Seattle Repertory Theatre and the Alabama Shakespeare Festival. She has designed for thirteen seasons at The Oregon Shakespeare Festival and has been an associate artist with The Virginia Stage Company and The Alliance Theatre. Susan has designed over 50 productions at The Alliance Theatre in Atlanta working there with many of the great directors, designers and playwrights of the American Stage. Her costume designs for film and television include "Miss Evers' Boys" for HBO, "Mama Flora's Family" for CBS and the feature film "The Adventures of Ociee Nash". Susan has also worked extensively as a photo stylist and creative designer for the print industry. For Sterling Publishers, she has authored three books on home décor and simple sewing. "I am honored to join the design program at The University of Texas, with its' rich legacy of costume historians and design faculty. The quality of the facilities and the staff at this institution are unequaled in the academic field."
