World AIDS Day Conference on "The Future of Access"

Sun, November 18, 2012

Please join us on Friday, November 30th, for this year’s World AIDS Day Conference on “The Future of Access.”  The event will be held from 10am-1pm in the Eastwoods Room in the Texas Union.  The event is co-sponsored by the Rapoport Center’s Health & Human Rights Working Group, FaceAIDS, and the Department of English.  Free HIV screening will be available.
Invited speakers include:
Jeff Hitt, Texas Department of State Health Services
Jeff Hitt has worked as a planner, epidemiologist, and evaluator in the HIV/STD Program at the Texas Department of State Health Services for the past ten years.  Since 2009, he has been the manager of HIV prevention, responsible for coordinating policies and efforts across the state of Texas.  Jeff earned a Masters in Education from the University of Texas at Austin’s Health Education/Health Promotion program.
Matthew Kavanagh, Health GAP (Global Access Project)
Matthew Kavanagh is the senior policy analyst for Health GAP (Global Access Project) and a Benjamin Franklin Doctoral Fellow at the University of Pennsylvania.  Matthew’s work explores how globalized private property rights and human/economic rights are balanced in the global South and the implications for people’s access to essential goods such as AIDS medicines and water.  He has published widely, drafted legislation that was introduced in the U.S. House of Representatives, presented before the U.N. Special Rapporteur for the Right to Health, and led a successful campaign to secure HIV treatment for over two million people.  Matthew earned a BA in Political Science from Vassar College and a Masters in Community Organizing and Education from Harvard University.
