Advisor Wins National Award
The Economics Department is pleased to announce that Jinane Sounny-Slitine has been awarded a 2013 NACADA Outstanding New Advisor Certificate of Merit for Academic Advising.  Ms. Sounny-Slitine is an Associate Academic Advisor. She has been with the Department of Economics since she first started working as a Student Associate in 2004 while pursuing her Bachelor of Science in Human Development and Family Sciences at The University of Texas at Austin. Since then Ms. Sounny-Slitine has recently received her Master of Social Work from Texas State University while continuing to work in the Department of Economics Undergraduate Advising Office. In addition to her general advising duties, Ms. Sounny-Slitine works closely with students who want to study abroad, incoming exchange and intentional students, and most recently she created and coordinates the Econ Peer Mentor Program (EPMP). EPMP matches freshmen Econ majors with upperclassmen who have demonstrated success as economics students.

The National Academic Advising Association (NACADA) seeks “to promote quality academic advising and professional development of its membership to enhance the educational development of students.”  The Outstanding New Advisor Certificate of Merit is a national award that honors individuals who have served in an advising role for no more than three years.  Recipients are chosen by a selection committee that looks for excellence in an advising role evidenced by practices that include strong interpersonal skills; evidence of student success rate; caring, helpful attitude toward advisees, faculty and staff; monitoring of student progress toward academic and career goals; mastery of institutional regulations, policies, and procedures; and ability to engage in, promote, and support developmental advising.

Jinane will receive her Certificate of Merit during a special awards reception this October at the NACADA Annual Conference in Salt Lake City, UT.
