Joy Youwakim

Recent Economics graduate, Joy Youwakim was chosen as one of five finalists for the General Mills-Feeding Better Futures Contest.

Students, from age 13 through 21, sent in their submissions for ways to solve the food accessibility problems of today and tomorrow.

The grand prize winner, selected in June, will receive $50,000, an opportunity to mentor with industry leaders, and the ability to share their idea at the Aspen Ideas Festival. The runners-up will receive $10,000 and the opportunity to mentor with industry leaders.

Joy’s submission outlined her research with landfill farming. Her submission, Landfill Farming: Curbing Loss of Arable Land and Increasing Food Security, explores the possibility of growing food on otherwise unused spaces in order to aid communities in need.
