4:00 PM - 6:00 PM

The department of French and Italian, the Center for European Studies, the program in Comparative Literature and the program in Medieval Studies present "'Unhomely' Encounters with Others in Medieval Travel Literature," a presentation by Simon Gaunt, Professor of French Literature at King's College London.

This lecture examines the representation of encounters between European and other cultures in Marco Polo's Le Divisement du monde and John Mandeville's Le Livre des merveilles and will argue that such encournters may usefully be read as instances of what Freud calls the uncanny. The lecture will discuss manuscript illustrations as well as the texts.
