Visiting writer Hayan Charara will teach in Fall 2005

An Arab-American, Charara's work is deeply influenced by both his hometown of Detroit, Michigan and his experience being the son of Muslim immigrant parents. In addition to his collection of poems, The Alchemist's Diary (2001), he has also published works in literary journals such as The Kenyon Review and Post Gibran: Anthology of New Arab American Writing, and has been the editor of the annual literary anthology, Graffiti Rag, since 1994. Currently, he is working on a novel entitled The Mythology of Love and Hate.

Charara graduated from Wayne State University in Detroit before earning his master's degree in social and critical theory and cultural anthropology from New York University. Since then, he has taught at New Jersey City, Wayne State, and Trinity Universities, among others.
