Assistant Professor Coleman Hutchison to participate in 2010-2011 Visiting Scholars Program

The English Department would like to congratulate Assistant Professor Coleman Hutchison, who begins his year-long appointment in the American Academy of Arts and Sciences Visiting Scholars Program this fall. As a 2010-2011 Visiting Scholar, Professor Hutchison plans to complete a book on Confederate literary culture, as well as begin a second project tentatively titled “The Ditch is Nearer: Race, Place, and American Poetry.”

During his appointment, Professor Hutchison will have the opportunity to participate in conferences and seminars sponsored by the Academy, conduct individual research, and collaborate with Academy Fellows and members, some of America’s “most distinguished leaders in science, scholarship, public affairs and business and the arts.” According to the American Academy’s Web site, the purpose of the Visiting Scholars Program is “to support the work of younger public policy analysts, humanists, and social scientists who show promise of becoming leaders in their field.” The Academy chooses seven to eight Visiting Scholars annually through a national competition.

Founded in 1780, The American Academy of Arts and Sciences serves as “an independent policy research center that conducts multidisciplinary studies of complex and emerging problems.” The Academy undertakes the Visiting Scholars Program in collaboration with the Harvard Humanities Center.

Coleman Hutchison (Ph.D., Northwestern, 2006), an Assistant Professor in the Department of English, teaches and writes about U.S. literature and culture to 1900. He has abiding interests in poetry, print culture, regional and national literatures, popular and folk music, and histories of sexuality. His essays have appeared in American Literary History, Comparative American Studies, The Emily Dickinson Journal, and PMLA.
