Summer's Lease: Study Shakespeare, Austen, and the Gothic Novel at Oxford's Wadham College

The Department of English at The University of Texas at Austin has sponsored a summer program at Oxford since 1984. The Oxford Summer Program gathers students to enjoy life and literature at the University of Oxford, the oldest English-speaking university in the world. In Summer 2011, the Program will be housed at Wadham College. Students take one or two upper-division English classes and enjoy many field trips and theatrical performances. This program is a wonderful balance of academics and fun, an opportunity to get to know Department of English faculty and other students outside the classroom, and a chance to live in an early 17th-century English college in modern-day Oxford. Shakespeare reminds us that "summer's lease hath all too short a date"; the Oxford Program will stock your imagination for years to come.

The Oxford Summer Program fees are $6000 per student. This includes: a private room, breakfasts and most dinners for the length of the program, coach travel for program events, international health insurance coverage during the program dates, entrance fees and theatre tickets for all program trips, and a final banquet. Each student must also pay for: UT-Austin summer tuition, airfare, personal items, any additional health or travel insurance, most lunches, a $50 application fee, and any independent travel expenses.

Scholarships are available for students who demonstrate need and who have good academic standing. Students can apply for some study abroad scholarships, including Department of English and College of Liberal Arts Oxford Summer Program scholarships, through the Study Abroad Office's "Global Assist" online program. Awards vary, but usually range from $500 to $3000. Most summer study abroad scholarships are awarded during the spring semester. There are additional financial aid resources available, including federal aid awarded through the University of Texas at Austin, primarily in the form of loans.
