As soon as we have your basic information from the Information Survey, we will begin the process of requesting a J-1 visa for you and a J-2 visa for your family members, if applicable.

The J-1 visa request is processed through UT Austin's International Office (IO) and you will begin to receive e-mails from them as soon as we have submitted the initial request. If you have questions at any point during the visa process, please feel free to contact the staff at The Center for European Studies.

In order to receive the J-1 visa, there are a number of requirements. To make things as simple as possible, you can send the required documents to CES and we will be happy to forward everything to the International Office for you.

If you are not being funded by UT Austin: Verification of financial support from your home university is required. Verification can be supplied in the form of a letter on letterhead stating the amount being paid and the pay period (typically January through May of the year you will be in Austin). For more information, please visit the IO website

J-1 Exchange Visitors are required by the U.S. Department of State to hold sufficient insurance coverage throughout the duration of your stay. For more information on Insurance Requirements, please visit the IO website here.

IO Insurance

As soon as all documents are received by the IO, they will process the visa application and mail you the DS-2019 form. You will receive an e-mail from the IO with the name of the mail carrier (Fed Ex, UPS, etc) and tracking number.
