Dr. Paul Cobb, Associate Professor in Near Eastern Languages and Civilizations at the University of Pennsylvania, received his Ph.D. in 1997 from the University of Chicago.  His current research interests include Medieval Islamic social and cultural history; Medieval Arabic literature; The Crusades; and the Il-Khanate.  His most current publication, Umayyad Legacies: Medieval Memories from Syria to Spain (Leiden: E. J. Brill, 2010), is a collection of papers on Islam’s first dynasty from a conference he organized in Damascus, Syria in 2006.
