Real French for the classroom: using authentic material to improve listening skills

RFI is the leading French international news channel broadcasting worldwide in 13 languages via its FM network, the Internet, mobile telephones, cable and satellite to an audience of more than 35 million regular listeners in the world.

Since 1988, the RFI “langue française” department has been in charge of programs on air and on line for learners and teachers of French. Some of the well known programs are the news in simple French and “ Les mots de l’actualité”. Online, teachers and learners find listening comprehension exercises, as well as ready to take away lesson plans based on sound extracts from RFI programs. Beginners find online the bilingual crime stories, along with grammar and vocabulary aids.

For teachers, the vast range of RFI programs provides a tremendous resource of news and audio clips in spoken French. Seven days a week, RFI offers several programs in various formats on topics ranging from current affairs to sport events or culture. They will meet your students’ interest and enhance their motivation.

The Center for European Studies at UT Austin and the France-UT Institute are delighted to host a FREE workshop for teachers of French of all levels on Monday, November 14. This RFI workshop aims to enable teachers to use different radio formats for various pedagogical purposes.
