Olympics: Read More About the EU's History in Sports

Pierre de Coubertin, the founder of the modern Olympic Movement, once said,"Holding an Olympic Games means evoking history." Later this month, the European Union will once again welcome the Olympics to its shores. When the torch is lit in London, it will mark the 24th time that the modern Olympic Games have been hosted by a city in one of today's 27 Member States.

The Olympics, like many other organized sporting events, not only entertain and amaze, but also play an important role in society. Sports have the potentialto improve the health and productivity of citizens; break down social barriers; and contribute to economic growth.
