Lecture Body-Specific Abstract Concepts: Mental metaphors with and without linguistic metaphors

Mon, April 20, 2009 | PAR 301

3:00 PM

When people talk about abstract ideas, they often use metaphors from more concrete domains like space. In the first part of this talk, Casasanto reviews a series of experiments showing that these linguistic metaphors correspond to non-linguistic 'mental metaphors', which people activate automatically when they're talking and thinking. The last part of the lecture addresses the question: Where do these mental metaphors come from?
