Reading Anxiety in the Flour Scene from Béroul’s Tristan and Iseult: Anxieties about Genealogy and the Transition from the Oral to Written Word

This paper provides a close reading of the flour scene in Beroul's Le Roman de Tristan. There are two distinct readings of this scene examined in this paper: one in which the scene may be read as suggesting an anxiety about the loss of orality in the transition from oral performance to the written word, and one in which the scene may be read as reflecting an anxiety about the dangers posed by female sexuality to genealogy.

Velar obstruent palatalization in Picard: an OT-CC reanalysis

My current research explores dialectal variation in Picardie, focusing on the palatalization of velar obstruents. In the many varieties of Picard spoken within the region, four degrees of palatalization are observed: /k/, /kj/, /ʧ/, and /ʃ/. In this presentation, I explore the usefulness of OT-CC in examining this type of chain variation.
