FIGSO Presents: “Un esprit maladivement littéraire:” J. J. Grandville and the Writer in Nineteenth-Century France

“Un esprit maladivement littéraire”

J. J. Grandville and the Writer in Nineteenth-Century France

No other nineteenth-century, French caricaturist incited such vitriol from period writers as J. J. Grandville (1803-1847). Balzac, Baudelaire, the Goncourt brothers, Gautier, and Champfleury all wrote negatively of Grandville’s work, literally writing him off as an artist. This talk asks why:  what was it about Grandville’s work that made writers respond so vehemently? In considering writers’ response to Grandville, the talk will focus on the larger context of aesthetic anxieties between writer and caricaturist, word and image, born from the rise of popular imagery in nineteenth-century France.

The talk is adapted from Professor Youseif's book, Balzac, Grandville, and the Rise of Book Illustration (Ashgate, 2012).
