Biography


Elizabeth Mayne is a PhD candidate in French Linguistics.  She grew up in Evanston, Illinois and received her BA in French Studies (minor in Linguistics) and her MA in French Linguistics at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.  As a graduate student at Illinois, she taught beginning and intermediate level French courses.  Elizabeth then spent a year teaching English as a lectrice at the Université de Bourgogne, the second semester of which she also taught business English at the Institut Universitaire de Technologie in Dijon, France. Elizabeth is currently an Assistant Instructor at the University of Texas at Austin.

Elizabeth comes from a family of musicians and continues sing and play the violin in her free time.  She sang in University Chorus and Black Chorus at the University of Illinois, and was a member of the North Shore Choral Society in Evanston after returning from her year in Dijon.  Elizabeth also played in a university orchestra while in Dijon.

Elizabeth enjoys figure skating, and is a member of Austin Figure Skating Club.  She has had the pleasure of making skating friends both in the US and in France.

Recent research interests include address terms, folk pragmatics, social semiotics, and computer-mediated communication.

French 611C is the second semester elementary French course at the University of Texas and assumes a basic knowledge of the language. Français interactif is a unique beginning French program developed at the University of Texas. Français interactif  helps you explore the French language and culture by following the lives of real UT students who participated in the UT Summer Program in Lyon, France. The UT students will introduce you to their French host families, their French university, and their lives in France.  Keep in mind as you watch these students that they were in your position only a year ago--enrolled in beginning French at UT!  This program shows you that it IS possible to learn French well enough to communicate with native speakers.

In addition to following the exploits of these UT students, you will also watch videos of native French speakers as well as scenes of day-to-day interactions (e.g., vendors in the market, waiters at a café, children getting ready to go to school, etc.)  These video-based materials give Français interactif an authenticity and immediacy lacking in most commercially produced textbooks.

As its name implies, Français interactif emphasizes interaction: student/teacher, student/student, student/computer, and even student/native-speaker.  The goal of these materials is in its title: interaction in French!  More specifically, the goal of this course is to improve your listening, speaking, reading and writing skills in French.  This means that you will learn useful vocabulary, grammatical structures, and cultural information, which is embedded naturally in the videos and textbook content.  The classroom focus is on learner-centered group activities and language is naturally communicative.

FR 612, 312L, 312M, 312N, or the equivalent.

Course Description

This course will be taught in French.

The objective of this course is to improve all four language skills (listening, speaking, reading and writing) through a series of communicative tasks (compositions, listening comprehension activities, dictations, oral practice, etc.). Emphasis is placed on diversifying vocabulary, mastering a wider range of grammatical structures, increasing fluency, and developing appropriate rhetorical strategies for essay writing in French. And finally, participants can expect to learn about social issues in the French-speaking world (e.g. role of media in society, immigration, globalization, education, etc.)

FR 317C. Enhancing French Skills. An advanced intermediate course which serves to
continue the development of your communication abilities in French by practicing the four basic skills of speaking, listening, writing and reading.  In this course, you will expand your knowledge of the French language and culture through the daily use of authentic documents, such as songs, movie clips, comic strips, journalistic and literary readings, internet videos, and websites.  Meets the prerequisite requirements for French 320E or 324L.  Three lecture hours a week for one semester. Prerequisite: French 611C with a grade of at least C.
