With nearly 50,000 other students and a 350-acre campus just blocks from downtown Austin, you’re sure to find something to do and someone to do it with.

Many students join organizations, volunteer or participate in recreational sports by playing on an intramural team, working out in one of four gyms or lounging around the Gregory Gym Aquatic Complex. If you prefer lecture halls, you'll frequently find world-class musicians and speakers on campus. In recent years, the university has welcomed engaging speakers like the Dalai Lama, Barack Obama, Bill Gates, Al Gore and filmmaker Robert Rodriguez, as well as performers such as Jerry Seinfeld, Kanye West, George Lopez, and Keith Urban.

And whether students need to conduct research for a term paper or just want to spend a quiet afternoon in the museum, they have the resources of the university’s world-class libraries and museums right at their fingertips.

Longhorn students experience and contribute to a powerful center of learning that provides access to academic centers and programs, archives, museums, and libraries filled with treasures that bring the world to life. Whether students need to conduct research or just want to spend a quiet afternoon in the museum, they have the resources they need at their fingertips.

  • The university’s library system is the fifth largest in the United States—holding more than eight million volumes in 17 different libraries across campus. The library system holds specialized collections in architecture, Latin American culture and history, law, life and marine sciences and more.
  • The Harry Ransom Center, one of the world’s finest cultural archives, contains the world’s first photograph, a rare Gutenberg Bible, original manuscripts from renowned authors including Ernest Hemingway, T. S. Eliot and James Joyce, the collections of Woody Allen and Robert DeNiro, and the Woodward and Bernstein Watergate archive.
  • History buffs can visit the Lyndon Baines Johnson Presidential Library and Museum—the country’s most visited presidential library—to see exhibits and archives from the 1960s and the career of the 36th president. Permanent exhibits include LBJ’s presidential limousine, a replica of the Oval Office, gifts from world leaders, historical documents and videos and much more.
  • Art lovers can stop by the Blanton Museum of Art—the largest university art museum in the country and third largest museum in Texas—to gaze at Old Master paintings and modern and contemporary American and Latin American art.
  • The Texas Memorial Museum—the state museum of natural and cultural sciences—houses all kinds of geological and natural treasures (and lots of fossils).

The Department of French and Italian

The Department of French and Italian faculty and staff provide and support innovative, high quality teaching responsive to educational needs and interests of students through courses in pedagogy, language teaching, literary criticism, and cultural studies. The department offers the innovative online resources Français Interactif; Tex's French Grammar; Danteworlds; and Radio Arlecchino.

Virtual Tutorial Centers (Spring 2021)

The Department of French and Italian invites all UT students currently enrolled in FR 601C, FR 611C, FR 406, FR 407, FR 412K, FR 317C, ITL601C, and ITL611C to visit the French and the Italian Virtual Tutorial Centers.

Tavola Italiana

Informal Italian conversation practice Friday afternoons at the Texas Union's Cactus Café. Open to all students of Italian. Contact Antonella Olson for more information.

Café français
