Jennifer A Miller, Associate Professor of GIScience in the Department of Geography and the Environment, is part of a six person team that received a $6.2 million five-year award under the U.S. Department of Defense's highly competitive Multidisciplinary University Research Initiative Program (MURI).

The team’s research project, titled ‘Networked PalYnology Models of Pollen and Human Systems’ (NYMPHS) addresses the Army Research Office’s request for topics on Multi-layer Network Modeling of Plant and Pollen Distribution across Space.

NYMPHS is a suite of forensic palynological and geocomputational models, combined with open-source visualization tools that will support rapid geolocation of geographically indeterminate forensic and other samples based on pollen, with inputs from DNA metabarcoding. In contrast to existing approaches, the NYMPHS platform expressly incorporates human impacts on the distribution of plants to allow, for the first time, national security forces to meaningfully geolocate pollen samples. The team is comprised of experts in forensic palynology, landscape genetics, pollination networks, ecological systems, geographic information science, geocomputation, spatial analytics, social network analysis, mathematical programming, and optimization. Miller’s role will be to develop species distribution models that incorporate biotic, abiotic, movement and social/human factors. Along with Shalene Jha from UT-Austin Biology, other members of the team come from Arizona State University and Emory University.
