Fulbright-NSF Grant to Greta Wells, PhD Candidate in Geography
Greta Wells

PhD candidate Greta Wells has been awarded a Fulbright-NSF Arctic Research Grant for Iceland in 2019-2020. She will spend 9 months in Iceland conducting research for her dissertation project, “Reconstructing Glacial Lake Outburst Floods along the Hvítá River and Gullfoss Waterfall, Iceland.” Her research uses a suite of geomorphologic, geochronological, and hydraulic modeling techniques to reconstruct a series of glacial lake outburst floods (also known by the Icelandic term “jökulhlaups”) that occurred during Icelandic Ice Sheet deglaciation roughly 10,000 years ago. Results will place these catastrophic events in the broader context of Icelandic paleoenvironmental change, explore their use as an analogue for contemporary jökulhlaups in Arctic and alpine regions worldwide, and yield insight into the role of extreme events on landscape evolution. Greta will be based in Reykjavík at the University of Iceland’s Institute of Earth Sciences and the Icelandic Meteorological Office.
