Dr. Rich Heyman wins AAG’s Jim Blaut Award

Sun, March 1, 2009

The award recognizes a scholar who, over the course of her/his life, has (1) used a geographic and historical analysis of capitalism to explain current social injustices and inequalities; (2) promoted activism against oppressive power relations both within and outside the academy; and (3) bridged socialist theory and practice.

Previous recipients of the award include Ruth Gilmore, Erik Swyngedouw and Audrey Kobayashi. The selection board was particularly impressed by Dr. Heyman’s commitment to bridging the gap between academic labor, community activism, and radical pedagogy, especially while he has been serving in the vulnerable position as a non-tenured faculty member.

Dr. Heyman will receive a $500 honorarium and will present the Jim Blaut Memorial Lecture at the Association of American Geographers Meeting in Las Vegas on March 24.
