Die Mörder

German director Wolfgang Staudte’s "Die Mörder sind unter uns" is the first Trümmerfilm and the first feature film made in Germany after World War II. Susanne Wallner returns from a concentration camp to the ruins of Berlin, where she discovers someone else living in her apartment: former army surgeon, Dr. Hans Mertens. Traumatized, cynical, and drowning his depression in alcohol, the doctor refuses to leave. Once they agree to share the apartment, the two discover mutual sympathy, even love for one another. But the relationship becomes stressed by their discovery of Mertens’ former army captain—a cruel and unscrupulous opportunist who ordered the execution of over one hundred innocent people—alive and residing nearby. German with English subtitles. 91 minutes
