Yiddish Folksong Two Part Presentation: Dr. Itzik Gottesman and Ethel Raim

Part I:

Dr. Itzik Gottesman will present a talk on "The Life of the Yiddish Folksinger." Over the past 150 years Jewish folklorists have collected hundreds of Yiddish songs in Eastern Europe and in the United States but hardly ever wrote down even the smallest detail about the singer's life: how did they learn the song, where and when do they sing it? What does the song mean to them? In this talk, Dr. Gottesman will present the life history of one singer and using rare field recordings show how these songs fit into her life and view of the world.

Part II:

Ethel Rain, a pioneer in bringing traditional Yiddish and Balkan vocal music to a wider American popular audience, will perform. Ms. Raim co-founded, and was for many years the artistic director, of the Center for Traditional Music and Dance in Manhattan. As a sought-after teacher and performer of traditional Yiddish songs, she has traveled to festivals in Europe, Canada, and many US states.
