Panel Discussion: "The Legacies of the September 11 Coup d'Etat in Chile: Four Decades Later"

September 11, 2013 marks the 40th anniversary of the Chilean coup d'etat which represented a historical turning point during last century in Latin America. Of the many military coups that Latin America has seen in the last century, it is the Chilean coup of September 11, 1973 that has rooted itself most deeply in the collective memory of people around the world.

Panelists will explore the legacies of the military coup that overthrew President Salvador Allende and discuss the lingering effects of the coup and the political repression that followed on Chilean politics and society as well as on other countries around the world. Featured panelists include Maria Angelica Bautista, Brown University; David Spener, Trinity University; Raul Madrid, Department of Government; and Paloma Diaz, LLILAS Benson.
