Sophomore Wins Undergraduate Best Paper Award
Zachary Dwyer

Sophomore Zachary Dwyer has received a Best Paper Award from the 25th Annual Illinois State University Conference for Students of Political Science. As such, the paper will be published in Critique, an Illinois State political science journal.

Dwyer’s paper, “The Founding Nightmare Realized: Demagoguery, Fascism, and Donald Trump,” began as a project for Jeff Tulis’ GOV 310 Honors course. Dwyer continued working with Tulis after the course, and enrolled in his GOV 379 seminar, Regime Perspective in American Politics.

In his paper, Dwyer presents Donald Trump's campaign and the early portion of his presidency as a platform for assessing what demagoguery and fascism might look like at the highest levels of American politics.

Dwyer found the conference itself enjoyable. “The ISU graduate students and professors who organized the conference were great and it was gratifying to have the opportunity to a share a semester's worth of hard work. I gave a 15-minute presentation to the Political Theory panel summarizing my major points,” he said.

Dwyers is the seventh award-winning student since 2007 Tulis has sent to the annual ISU conference.
