Sean Theriault Selected to Academy of Distinguished Teachers

Tue, May 15, 2012

Sean Theriault has been selected to the Academy of Distinguished Teachers at The University of Texas at Austin and now carries the title of Distinguished Teaching Professor. Selection to the Academy is the university’s most highly coveted recognition for teaching. Theriault is one of four new members. Campus-wide, the Academy’s membership totals 119.

Theriault’s courses have included Congressional Elections, The United States Congress, Congress and the Presidency, Politics of the Catholic Church, Party Polarization in the United States, and Research on the U.S. Congress. He has pioneered an undergraduate research laboratory on the U.S. Congress, which involves undergraduates directly in his own research and includes a research trip to Washington, D.C.

“The best I can do as a teacher is to facilitate my students’ abilities to make discoveries,” Theriault says. “The discoveries I expect from my students need not revolutionize political science, but they ought to revolutionize my students’ understanding of the political world. If my students reach the end of the semester and have not discovered surprising and important aspects of their government or the world in which they live, then I am disappointed. If they have not learned the method of discovery, I have failed.”
