It’s (Change in) the (Future) Economy, Stupid

Looking to analyze deeper the relationship between public perceptions of the economy and how voters behave, new research by Christopher Wlezien, with Stuart Soroka and Dominik Stecula, investigates how mass media impacts these perceptions. The research finds that media and public opinion react to change in the economy more than actual economic conditions, and that they react to where the economy is going, not where it is or has been.

The research is rooted in 30,000 U.S. news stories during a 30-year period. Read more from the American Journal of Political Science, where the article is being published.
