Read All About It! Media Literacy and Journalism in the Global Studies Classroom

Hemispheres Summer Institute 2019

Dates: June 11 - 14, 2019

**This is a four-day workshop**

This summer, we will examine ways in which journalism and media resources can be used to engage students in the social studies classroom. Journalists and academic experts will discuss ways in which global news, print and photojournalism, and other media resources can be used in social studies curriculum to support a range of learning goals. The Institute speakers and activities will address ways in which students can improve media literacy skills, build and appetite for quality journalism, and become global citizens. Experts will discuss ways in which journalism can help students understand real world issues, such as migration, land and property rights, and climate change. Participants in this interactive Institute will be given ample time for discussion and will work on developing media-related curriculum resources.

This year Hemispheres is partnering with the Pulitzer Center on Crisis Reporting, an award-winning Washington, DC-based non-profit journalism organization dedicated to supporting in-depth engagement with under-reported global affairs. The Pulitzer Center sponsors quality international journalism and works with various schools and universities to offer outreach and educational programming.
