Listening to Other Stories: Education, Migration and Indigenous Knowledge
An Experiential Journey in Oaxaca, Mexico
July 8–14, 2012

The Teresa Lozano Long Institute of Latin American Studies at the University of Texas at Austin, part of the Hemispheres consortium, is partnering with Ollin Tlahtoalli Language and Culture Center to conduct a week-long exploration of Oaxaca designed especially for K-12 educators.

This journey will include visits in Oaxaca City, the state capital and a UNESCO World Heritage Site; discussions about education, migration, and identity in Oaxaca, a state with a significant indigenous (Zapotec and Mixtec) population and strong flows of migration to and from the United States; visits to local non-profits that work with migrants; a day trip to the indigenous community of Cuajimoloyas and a rural elementary school; as well as tourist sites such as Teotitlan del Valle (famous for its weavers), Mitla (a significant Zapotec archaeological site), a mezcal factory, and a community market.

You will be accompanied by an educator from the University of Texas, who will help you process the experience for your classroom. Space is limited, and preference will be given to those who teach world cultures, history, geography, and Spanish, as well as curriculum specialists, library/media specialists, or others in support roles for world studies teachers.

The Teresa Lozano Long Institute of Latin American Studies is a licensed provider of Continuing Education Units (CEUs) by the State Board of Educator Certification, and will award professional development hours for the program.

The $1,200 per-person cost includes in-country expenses:

  • Local transportation
  • Double accommodations in Oaxaca
  • Breakfast daily, one lunch, two dinners
  • Tour guide and speaker fees
  • Site entry fees

The fee does not include:

  • Airfare (group airfare will be booked by our travel agency and is estimated at $800-$900 from Dallas/Houston; our travel agent will make arrangements to/from your preferred airport of departure.)
  • Passport fees
  • Independent travel, sightseeing and meals
  • Spending money for souvenirs, personal purchases, telecommunications and Internet, etc.
  • International medical insurance (required), vaccinations
  • Travel insurance (highly recommended)

Participants should be educators in a K-12 institution, ideally teaching subjects related to Mexico (curriculum specialists, library/media specialists, and instructional aids are welcome). We cannot accept children under 18 due to insurance and liability reasons. Participants may bring a non-teaching travel companion.

Reservations and a non-refundable deposit of $300 are due by May 21, with the balance due by June 15. Please note that we may stop taking reservations sooner if the program fills up. Participants who register and submit a deposit by May 9 will receive an early bird discount of $100.
