The Department of English presents:

"'Tears such as angels weep': The Evolution of Sadness in Demons"

A talk by Professor Juanita Feros Ruys
The University of Sydney

"This talk examines how the attribution of sadness to demons was a highly fraught and late development in demonology, because of the complexity of this emotion in terms of its relationship to the impassible God and the passion of Jesus. Portraying demons who could suffer pain and feel sadness led to the theologically tricky waters of creating sympathetic demons and the consequences this could produce."
