Book release party for faculty collaboration, Global History

Wed, December 6, 2006

Approximately 75 faculty, graduate students, and staff members of the department, along with guests from as far away as Oxford and Yale Universities, attended the book release event.

Professor Alan Tully, chair of the department, introduced Professor Hopkins. Tully commented on what a remarkable job Hopkins did in encouraging so many junior faculty members in this collaborative effort.

Hopkins said that this book is the first publication of its kind, because it was written by so many members from the same department and it deals with a new subject: globalization. Among the book's contributors are seven faculty members, one former lecturer in the history department, and William H. McNeill, professor emeritus of the University of Chicago, who provided an Afterword.

Hopkins paid tribute to each of his colleagues, including Professors Erika Bsumek, Roger Hart, Mark Metzler, Tracie Matysik, Karl Miller, Mark Lawrence, Philip White, and Geoffrey Schad.

Global History synthesizes diverse perspectives on globalization in locales spanning the globe, making a valuable contribution to the important field of world history.
