History Dept. Chair finalist for dean of College of Liberal Arts position

Mon, February 12, 2007

Four candidates for the position of dean of the College of Liberal Arts at The University of Texas at Austin have been selected as finalists and will meet with faculty, students and staff members of the college in open forums in February and March. The candidates also will meet with university administrators and deans.

A national search for a new dean of the college began after Richard Lariviere, dean since 1999, announced he would leave his post to become provost and executive vice chancellor of the University of Kansas. Dr. Judith Langlois, the Charles and Sarah Seay Regents’ Professor of Developmental Psychology, has served as interim dean since Lariviere’s departure.

An 18-member search committee of deans, faculty, staff, students and alumni scheduled the meetings to provide members of the university community an opportunity to listen to and engage with the candidates. The committee, chaired by Thomas Staley, director of the Harry Ransom Center and the Harry Huntt Ransom Chair in Liberal Arts, plans to submit its recommendations to Provost Steven Leslie by the end of March.
