The Humanities Program

Kaitlin Bethay

Major(s): Humanities

Hometown: Keller, TX

Activities: Liberal Arts Honors, Liberal Arts Council

Fun facts: I studied abroad in London last summer.

Why the Humanities Program?

I entered UT undeclared because I wasn't sure what I wanted to do with my life. I was interested in a lot of subjects, but I couldn't find a major that encompassed everything I wanted to explore. When I found the Humanities Program, I knew I could take all my interests and transform them into course of study unique to me. The opportunity seemed too good to pass up!

What led to your research interest?

Throughout middle school and most of high school I wanted to be journalist. I believed reporting had the power to change the world and the thought telling people's stories appealed to me. My focus began to shift when my AP Government class covered the judiciary. I became fascinated by the law, the way it's interpreted, and how it can improve lives. In my contract, I married these two interests by focusing on human rights and the media.

How has the Humanities Program contributed to your experience at UT?

It's no secret UT is big place and sometimes it feels like you're lost in the crowd. The Humanities Program has given me community where I feel like a person instead of number. I'm close with my advisor and other humanities students, which has helped me navigate through this huge institution. The program's interdisciplinary aspect has also allowed and encouraged me to spend time in different departments inside and outside the College of Liberal Arts. I love that I don't have to spend all of my time in one area and can experience more of the exemplary education UT has to offer.

What are your future plans?

I plan on attending law school next fall, but I haven't decided where just yet.
