This fall the Humanities Institute will host a series of Health & Humanities Research Seminars in partnership with Dell Medical School. A follow-up to the PUI, the seminars are intended to engage scholars and practitioners across the health and humanities disciplines in research-oriented dialogue.

The inaugural September 10th seminar featured a presentation from University Distinguished Professor Barbara Jones, the Associate Dean for Health Affairs and Co-Director for the Institute for Collaborative Health Research & Practice at the Steve Hicks School of Social Work, and the associate director of social sciences and community based research at the LIVESTRONG Cancer Institutes. Dr. Jones' presentation is entitled “Adolescents and Young Adults with Cancer: Facing Loss, Finding Meaning, and Focusing on the Future.”

A participant in the PUI, Dr. Jones’ research focuses on improving care for children, adolescents and young adults with cancer and their families. Her current research concentrates on palliative care, pediatric oncology social work interventions, and adolescent and young adult (AYA) cancer survivors. Her work has been funded by the National Institutes of Health, Palliative Care Research Network, Seton Healthcare System, and the Texas State Department of Health. Her work has been published in journals such as PediatricsCancerPediatric Blood and Cancer, and Journal of Cancer Survivorship
