Admission Requirements

What are the admission requirements?

Admissions are competitive. The minimum requirements of the Graduate School are as follows:

  • A bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited institution in the United States or a comparable degree from a foreign academic institution
  • A grade-point average of at least 3.00 in upper-division (junior- and senior-level) coursework and in any graduate work already completed
  • An official score on the GRE (optional due to Covid-19)
  • An acceptable score on either the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) or the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) for non-native speakers of English

In addition, the MA program in Humanities, Health, and Medicine requires that applicants submit:

  • Complete transcripts from all institutions of higher education attended
  • A personal statement of 500-800 words, which should include information about specific topics or areas of interest within the health humanities and about how earning the degree would help to advance the applicant’s academic, professional, or personal goals
  • Three letters of recommendation, at least two of which should be from professors with whom the applicant has studied at an institution of higher education (the latter requirement is negotiable for students who earned their previous degree more than five years ago)
  • Writing sample (10-20 pages). Your writing sample will be used to help assess your readiness for graduate-level work in humanities disciplines. The sample does not need to relate to health or medicine. For instance, you might choose to submit a paper that you wrote for a college class (or two papers if you do not have one that is at least ten pages).
  • Complete transcripts from all institutions of higher education attended
