We are looking for future Assistant Underwriters to join HCSC for our June 2015 training class! Underwriting is responsible for evaluating risk associated with group health benefit plans, including HMO, PPO, indemnity, dental, and prescription drug benefits. Decisions are made based on analysis of many considerations, such as mathematical formulas, group and individual eligibility, state and federal legislation, and financial analysis. Underwriters determine the rates and fees that HCSC will charge employers, ranging from small two-person organizations to local government agencies to Fortune 100 companies. Underwriters must work with Sales and Marketing to maintain a balance between financial profit and sales growth. 
Basic Function: 
This position will be responsible for performing underwriting support functions for large or national health accounts by running manual rates, completing forms, checking information, running and preparing reports, performing case maintenance functions, performing membership transactions, researching, handling problems and maintaining database information. This position will be responsible for learning the underwriting support functions and supporting the Underwriters. These positions are located in Chicago, IL, Downers Grove, IL and Richardson, TX. A comprehensive two month long training will be provided in Chicago for our new hire classes.  

Job Requirements: 
• Bachelor’s degree in the following concentrations; Math, Finance, Economics, Health/Public Health, Risk Management, Insurance or related field 
• GPA of 3.0 or greater 
• Math skills including the four basic math calculations (addition, subtraction, division & multiplication) and ability to estimate for mathematical reasonableness 
• Interpersonal skills to establish and maintain business relationships 
• Independent judgment and problem resolution skills 
• Work management skills including the ability to multi-task and prioritize 
• Verbal and written communication skills to include correct grammar, word choice, precision, conciseness, structure, audience appropriate tone and language 
• PC experience including Microsoft Office 
• Ability to attend a two month training in Chicago (Hires destined for Texas will be provided travel to and lodging in Chicago.)

Preferred Job Requirements: 
• Graduation by December 2014 (for January class) or May 2015 (for June class) 
• Knowledge of health care insurance products 
• Knowledge of state and federal legislation governing underwriting practices
