Organizational Overview: 
The Capital Teaching Residency (CTR) is a nationally recognized, highly selective teacher training program that provides a pathway for new teachers to develop into outstanding educators prepared to serve in high-need schools in Washington, D.C. 

CTRs make a commitment to teach for a minimum of three years in D.C. Residents spend the first year of this commitment—their residency year—training in a classroom with a highly effective mentor teacher at KIPP DC or E.L Haynes (high-performing D.C. public charter schools). During their residency year, CTRs learn the teaching profession through a gradual release model supported by their mentor teacher and school leaders, as well as certification coursework. 

CTR trains residents in contents areas with the greatest need for effective teachers in D.C. Residents train in Early Childhood Education, Elementary Education, Secondary Math or Science Education, and Secondary English Language Arts, and Special Education. Residents who are interested in pursuing a credential in Special Education can expect to spend two years completing certification coursework. 

Residents are an integral part of the school community at KIPP DC and E.L. Haynes. They slowly increase their teaching responsibility during their residency year. During their residency, CTRs participate in numerous professional development activities, including certification coursework, to improve their teaching practice and pedagogical knowledge. 

CTRs commit to two years of teaching beyond their residency year. After completing their residency, CTR alumni remain in the classroom and continue to teach at E.L. Haynes, KIPP DC, or partner public charter schools across the DC Metro area.  

Throughout the two years following the residency year, CTR continues to provide graduates with formal and informal support and professional development. 

Capital Teaching Resident Job Description 
Key Responsibilities: 
• Participate and contribute as a member of his/her particular school community 
• Attend all school level professional development (PD) sessions 
• Attend all PD and certification coursework specific to area of training 
• Attend CTR specific whole-group PD (scheduled on designated week nights, as well as one Saturday per month) 
• Track, analyze, and use data to drive teaching and instruction 
• Participate in weekly meetings with mentor/ host teacher 
• Participate in goal setting, observations, and debrief meetings with school leader 
• Participate in mid-year and end-of-the year evaluations by school leaders, based in part on the ability to raise student achievement 
• Implement feedback from observations by school leaders and mentor teachers into classroom practice 
• Conduct purposeful observations of mentor and other excellent teachers 

Requirements: 
• Bachelor’s degree (required) with 3.0 minimum GPA (preferred) 
• Math and Science residents are required to have completed either a Bachelor’s degree, Master’s degree, or a significant amount of coursework in their content area 
• Residents are required to pass their first Praxis II exam, as well as the CORE exam, before they begin their residency year in the fall. We will not, however, ask CTRs to take the Praxis exam until they have been admitted to the program, and we reserve the right to decline the admission of any accepted applicant that does not pass the required Praxis exams.

Compensation: 
Residents are provided a salary and benefits through the schools by which they are employed. The salary and benefits packages vary and are determined by the CTR training sites (KIPP DC and E.L. Haynes).
