In cooperation with the Tahoe Resource Conservation District, the Great Basin Institute is recruiting three Forest Habitat Enhancement Crew Members to serve as part of a six-person crew on California Tahoe Conservancy ( restoration, forestry, and maintenance projects. This is a labor-intensive and physically demanding position and applicants must demonstrate their ability to serve as a professional, mature team member. Duties include:

* Safely operating tools and equipment including chainsaws, chippers, brush cutters, various power/hand tools, and heavy equipment;
* Actively participating in routine safety talks and training sessions;
* Caring for, maintaining, and ensuring the security of State tools, property, and equipment;
* Serving as secondary driver for crew and equipment to and from project sites;
* Identifying property boundaries; and
* Performing warehouse maintenance tasks.

Projects include:

* Ecological restoration and site protection;
* Property and facility maintenance;
* Native tree planting and revegetation;
* Wildlife habitat enhancement;
* Hazard tree removal and fuel hazard reduction;
* Roping/rigging for safe tree removal;
* Soil erosion control; and
* Road and/or trail removal, rehabilitation and stabilization
Compensation: This is an AmeriCorps position, and members will receive a living stipend of $8,000 for the field season. This is not an hourly wage or a salary and is paid to members bi-weekly throughout their term of service. Upon completion of AmeriCorps service members shall receive an additional education award in the amount of $2,775 that can be used for paying off qualified student loans or paying tuition for a Title IV accredited college or program.

Location: South Lake Tahoe, CA

* Ability to perform safely and cooperatively in a group setting under a variety of conditions;
* Ability to perform manual labor in rough terrain, lift heavy objects, and work for extended periods of time in various weather conditions;
* Possession of a valid driver's license, with clean driving record. Final candidates will be required to provide a current 3-5 year Driver History record;
* Excellent communication skills;
* Demonstrated ability to follow directions and carry out specific project plans; and
* Meet AmeriCorps eligibility requirements: (1) U.S. citizenship or legal resident alien status, (2) must be at least 17 years of age and a have received a high school diploma or GED (or be willing to achieve this before using education award), (3) eligible to receive an AmeriCorps Education Award (limit of four in a lifetime, or equivalent of two full-time terms of service), and (4) pass National Sex Offender Public Registry (NSOPR) and federal criminal background checks.

* Education and background in ecological restoration, natural resources management, or land management; preferably in a leadership capacity;
* Ability to drive a tow vehicle and trailer;
* Familiarity with operation and maintenance of chainsaws, wood chippers, brush cutters, various power/hand tools, rigging equipment, and heavy equipment;
* Class A, B, or C chainsaw certification;
* Valid Class A or B driver’s license; and
* Ability to interpret assessor parcel maps and identify property boundaries.
