 Interns would work on a range of topics from climate change to sustainable practices, NEPA and environmental compliance to activities associated with cleanups of hazardous materials, and emergency response actions. Potential day to day projects could involve attending meetings with senior Departmental officials, meetings with other agencies including the White House Council on Environmental Quality, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, and the Federal Emergency Management Agency. Within the Department, interns will have the opportunity to interact with bureau personnel from the National Park Service and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, and other offices within Office of the Secretary such as Office of Budget, Office of Acquisition and Property Management, and Office of Law Enforcement, Security, and Emergency Management. 

Opportunities that interns have worked on include updating the Department’s green procurement plan, creating templates to recover costs for hurricane response activities, helping revise the environmental requirements for land acquisition and land disposal, helping revise the sustainable buildings implementation plan, participating in greening the new DOI cafeteria contract, participating in development and implementation of the Department’s green roof project, participating in various elements of emergency preparedness and response planning, preparing documents and briefings for senior Departmental leadership, developing public outreach materials (fact sheets, brochures and website, as well as helping with the planning of the Department’s Earth Day celebration and the Department’s Environmental Conference.
