The UK Government’s Science and Innovation Network delivers the UK’s economic and social goals - including growth and prosperity - and takes a lead in addressing global challenges, by harnessing the value of science and innovation discoveries and investments overseas.

The Science and Innovation Officer (S&I), based at the British Consulate-General, Houston, is part of a network of S&I officers in the US lead by the head of Science and Innovation Network in the British Embassy in Washington, DC. The objectives of the global S&I network are:
• Stimulate strategic science collaborations to benefit the UK and deliver wider policy goals
• Improve UK policy based on international experience and emerging opportunities and challenges
• Influence science and innovation policies of governments, industry and academia to benefit the UK
• Harness international technology partnerships and investment to grow UK innovation capability

The core objective of this job is to represent UK science and innovation interests in the Houston Consulate district. The Officer reports to the Senior Science and Innovation Officer in Houston and to the Head of S&I Network in Washington DC. The officer will work closely with fellow S&I officers across the US and colleagues from other British Government departments such as UK Trade & Investment (UKTI) and Press & Public Affairs (PPA) and UK science and research funding bodies.

Job Requirements:
The successful candidate will possess:
• Enthusiasm for Science, Science Policy and the Internationalisation of Science
• Strong networking skills and the ability to develop working relationships with contacts
• Confident identifying emerging technologies in the US and opportunities for closer UK engagement with individuals and institutions
• Ability to deliver projects, manage budgets, and
• Strong, communication skills, including presentation skills
• Good and committed team player, capable of working as a member of remote, as well as local, teams.

Duties include:
• Working with the head of team in Houston to cover the broad range of science and innovation developments in the South and South West
• Contributing to reports for UK stakeholders including senior scientists, learned societies, UK policy makers, Government Ministers and Parliament
• Supporting high-level visits relating to science and innovation
• Horizon-scanning developments in science, technology and policy
• Managing projects (such as workshops and visit programmes)to successful completion
• Supporting broader Consulate initiatives in support of UK prosperity


• 1-3 years of related professional experience
• Good academic and/or corporate background in science and innovation
• Highly motivated, organised, and resourceful
• Proven interpersonal skills, capable of effectively interacting with members of the public, science community, and senior government officials
• Good writing and communication skills with the ability to produce clear reports and to present effectively to a range of audiences
• Knowledge of UK science and innovation strengths and capabilities is a plus but not required
• Effective team player capable with working with local and regional teams
• Reliable, positive and open to new ways of working
