UT Press, Press Fellowship Program, Application Deadline, BTT Gateway Job ID 6758

Mon, March 31, 2014

The University of Texas Press is offering the James A. Michener Fellowship in Publishing for the 2014–2015 year, beginning September 1, 2014, and ending August 31, 2015.

The Fellowship program is designed to give one year of experience in book publishing to the most qualified applicants.
The 2014–2015 Fellowship is being offered in Marketing.
The Fellowship will consist of one year of intensive training in the Marketing department, with exposure to and instruction in the operations of the other departments.
The objective of the program is to help prepare the Fellow for a career in book publishing.
The emphasis will be on scholarly publishing, although much of the training will apply equally well to commercial publishing.

Eligibility and Requirements:
The James A. Michener Fellowship in Publishing is open to applicants with a degree in any field of the Humanities from any accredited institution of higher education, although degrees outside Humanities can be considered.
Applicants must have a strong desire to pursue a career in publishing.
The Fellow, before accepting the appointment, will be asked to sign a statement of understanding and intent—an understanding of the program’s purpose and procedures and the intent to complete the Fellowship year and to pursue a career in publishing.
Fellows are not enrolled in academic courses, and will not receive academic credit.

The Training:
Under the supervision of the Marketing and Communications Manager, the Marketing Fellow will work with each member of the department to gain a broad overview of all key marketing functions including: book publicity and advertising; exhibits planning; seasonal catalog preparation; and digital publishing and social media. The Fellow will also gain experience in research and outreach to potential markets (both traditional and online), graphic design assignments, and author relations, as well as growing and developing online audiences through a variety of digital platforms.
The Marketing Fellow must be a good communicator, detail-oriented, reliable, and someone who can manage multiple tasks. Preferred qualifications include graphic design experience and working with digital platforms—social media and audio and video software.

In addition to working with members of the Marketing department, the Fellow will have the opportunity to gain a holistic view of university publishing by visiting with other departments at the Press and will attend appropriate meetings of the staff and the Faculty Advisory Committee.
