Academy Sports + Outdoors

Summer 2011 Site Review

Position: Corporate Intern
Student: Sociology Senior

In my ten weeks at Academy Sports + Outdoors as a Corporate Intern, I realized there is not a typical day in Store Operations, and this is what excites me most about this career.  One day you may be preparing project tasks for senior-level management, and the next day you might be assisting the merchandising department to drive business.  However, there were a few basic responsibilities I needed to abide by each and every day.  These responsibilities included: punctuality, participation, and positivism.  Furthermore, my daily objective was to develop personally and professionally within Academy Sports + Outdoors and amplify my retail expertise.

The timing frame of the internship was one aspect that did stay the same.  This was Monday through Friday, 8 AM to 5 PM, with a one hour lunch break.  The projects I worked on each day depended on the department I was scheduled to work with each week.  The business units I partnered with over my ten-week period included: New Store Executive Training, Store Services Corporate, Store Services Stores, Store Support, IT, Merchandising, Distribution Center, Visual Planning, and Loss Prevention.  Each unit had its own slate of projects that needed to be completed, however the tasks within the projects stayed consistent throughout each week.  These tasks included: planning, meetings, discussions, store visits, associate shadowing, business updates, evaluation, troubleshooting, and future improvements.  I was able to participate in these tasks for all departments and give feedback on how these project tasks can be streamlined.  It was my objective to improve the dynamics between the corporate office and stores, and enhance processes to asset business opportunity.

Overall, this was an incredible opportunity and I am so happy I chose Academy Sports + Outdoors for my internship.  I am confident that I will be able to benefit any elite retail corporation once I graduate in May 2012, and I will have an instant impact on their company.  This internship has sharpened my retail expertise, and I recommend it to passionate, strong-minded students who have an interest in pursuing retail after graduation.
