Austin Winery

Fall 2014 Site Review

Position: Marketing and Sales Intern
Student: Ancient History & Classical Civilization Senior

Working for the Austin Winery is an exciting experience that will immerse you in a multi-faceted field. Not only will you receive experience in commercial sales and marketing but you will also gain knowledge of the world of winemaking. The Austin Winery opened just this past year and has an enormous capacity for growth. As an intern you will help configure and place them into an Austin niche as well as a national clientele base. With your marketing focus and sales enthusiasm you can help incorporate them into an even larger network. It is a fast paced and dynamic job, but if you are creative and driven, this is the job for you.

Work varies day to day and is never constrained by a rigid structure. In the mornings you will follow up with correspondences and contacts as well as prepare the wine tasting room with literature for potential walk ins throughout the day. The afternoon I usually follow up with resurants, event agencies, companies, and partners to grow the business contacts and drive sales. Lunch time is always exciting because it provides time for networking with local businesses and restaurants. It's an opportunity to pour The Austin Winery wines for potential buyers. Finally the afternoon ranges from wine tastings, in house bookkeeping and accounting, and any miscellaneous tasks that might need your attention. There is never a dull moment when working for the Austin Winery, and there is always an opportunity to build the brand.

Your internship will demand a lot of teamwork as well as independent task completions. You must come to work motivated and ready to be challenged. Just as you are gaining new business skills in effective communication and execution. The Austin Winery is gaining new creative energy from you.

Spring 2014 Site Review

I interned for The Austin Winery, which is an urban winery sourcing grapes from the prime AVAs of California, Oregon, Washington, and Texas. We currently have 8 wines and are working on a 9th (a Texas Merlot). As an urban winery, we don’t own the vineyards, but, rather, we source from small, premium growers. This allows for lower overhead, yet maintains the integrity of high quality wines. We are located off of 290E and Tuscany Way, about 15 minutes from downtown Austin. There are plans to open a downtown tasting room at the end of this year (2014). I am one of two interns in addition to the team of three guys (Founder and President Ross, VP Winemaker Cooper, and COO Matt) that comprise the company.

As an intern, I mostly dealt with marketing and design. I was responsible for becoming proficient in Adobe Creative Suite through carefully crafted assignments. I created tasting sheets, fact sheets, press releases, advertisements, did photography, and other things. My responsibilities were very broad since the winery is a startup – I wore many hats. I also consulted on design aspects, created vector artwork, and purchased merchandise. I cultivated my wine palette and studied the economics of running a winery. In the end, I learned an immense amount of skills from this internship and really became attached to my coworkers and the wine – and beverage industry as a whole. I played an integral part in the creation of this company, which is very rewarding. I will continue to see my hard work displayed in the future and have a portfolio to envy.
