Austin Code Department

Fall 2015 Site Review

Position: Media Intern
Student: Rhetoric and Writing Senior

My internship as a media intern for the City of Austin Code Department was a wonderful learning experience. For anyone interested in developing educational campaigns or working in public information, this is internship was a great way to use creativity and technology to work to get the citizens of Austin interested in how the Department was helping their community. The Department enforces and educates about city codes and ordinances.

As a media intern, my responsibilities included creating content for social media, monitoring our social media for opportunities to answer questions or supply information to the public, idealizing educational campaigns, writing copy, and developing a standard operating procedure for the Department’s social media. I also had opportunities to write scripts for PSAs and use introduce new technologies into the Department’s repertoire.

Getting to come up with the ideas for campaigns, getting them approved, and getting to create and distribute the campaign to the public was a great learning experience. As an intern, my ideas were always taken seriously and the Public Information team was always encouraging us interns to be creative and let us take the reins on putting together content for our social media platforms and our website. My typical day includes monitoring our social media, writing copy for a blog post or social media post, and working with the graphic designer to create visual components for our education campaigns.  My duties also include fielding calls from the media, like local news stations and newspapers.
