Caplan Miller Events

Spring 2015 Site Review

Position: Intern
Student: Sociology Junior

The Caplan Miller Office is a very chic, modern office on Burnet Road and it is a very nice place to work in. A “Day in the Life” of a Caplan Miller intern varies depending on the next upcoming event. For example, Austin fashion week has different daily tasks compared to preparing for a wedding. But our most common event this past semester has been weddings.

A day in the life of a Caplan Miller intern with a wedding coming up would go as follows. You arrive to the office at 10 a.m. and open the intern laptop to read the email that the intern supervisor has sent with that days to-do-list. You then copy the to-do-list into a sticky note on the laptop and as you complete each task you bold it. The first task is always completing the weekly checklist, which means going through the office and making sure all office and cleaning supplies are in stock. If something is running low or empty, you run an errand to pick it up.

The next task is typically proofing wedding invitations. This means going through the guest list spread sheet and making sure the name spelling is correct and the street addresses are correct. This is a very tedious task. After all envelopes are proofed you seal the envelopes one by one extremely carefully and place stamps extremely carefully; everything needs to look perfect. After this is completed you take the envelopes to the post office and hand cancel them one by one in a certain way that looks the best. After this is completed you typically take about a half hour lunch break.

After your lunch break, you start assembling the welcome boxes that go in the hotel rooms of the out of town guests. Each welcome box or bag is different depending on the wedding, but this is typically a fun task. It is very neat to see how they all come together. At the end of the day you complete you end of the day duties, which are taking out the trash from each supervisors desk, the main trash, and bathroom trash. Then going through the recycling to see which paper can be re-used and which paper can be recycled. After the trash and recycling you Windex the desks and tables and make everything appear how it did when you arrived that morning.

The tasks vary from day to day, some days most of the tasks are out running errands and some days you are in the office all day but no matter what there is always something that needs to be done so you are always busy.
