ChannelAustin

Fall 2012 Site Review

Position: Intern
Student: Liberal Arts Undeclared Junior

This internship is done at channelAustin, which is the doing-business-name of Austin’s local Public Access Television station. ChannelAustin and other Public Access stations around the nation are there to provide regular people with access to the tools (equipment, studio, editing programs) to create whatever film they want.

The best part of the internship is taking advantage of the free film courses and the free basic access pass, which when combined allow you to utilize their lights, audio, studios, and editing programs. Also, by getting to know the people that work there you learn a lot about what they do both for channelAustin and on the side. However, taking the classes is not a part of the 10-15 hours you’ll do every week.

Every week, you’ll be asked to do various tasks from your supervisor, Linda Litowsky, the executive director of channelAustin. For example, you’ll be asked to scan documents, pick up food, clean the studio, make buttons, attend events that channelAustin has set up booths for, log DVDs and capture them on the right format, be the production assistant on various productions, and market channelAustin through facebook, kickstarter.com, and other internet websites. You also might be asked to work on special assignments for her. For example, I was assigned many tasks related to completing the feature-length documentary, “Access This” that Linda was directing and producing. I mainly made several aftereffects animations for the documentary, but I also did a lot of research for the documentary, emailing/calling people, and even creating materials for the documentary.

Overall, I would recommend this internship to anyone who is looking to improve their technical skills and who wants to understand more about public access. It is a dying resource that is underfunded by our city government but a very, very valuable one.
