Frank Erwin Center

Spring 2014 Site Review

Position: Marketing Internship
Student: Sociology, Junior

This semester, I was a Marketing Intern at the Frank Erwin Center, UT’s Special Events Center. The Frank Erwin Center hosts UT men’s and women’s basketball games, as well as concerts, and entertainment events. As one of four Marketing Interns in their Communications Department this semester, my job consisted of many duties. My main job was to assist the marketing manager, publicist, and group sales representative. Daily, I would help create and execute grassroots plans, contact media for advertising trade, and assist in implementing various event-specific activities. Another one of my daily jobs was to answer the group sales phone line and process ticket orders. I also assisted with writing and distributing the monthly blog, Applause. Lastly, I would monitor the ads during UT basketball games and I would escort photographers on event days.

I worked about 15 hours/week at my internship this semester. My typical day would begin with me arriving to the internship, clocking in, and checking my e-mail to stay up-to-date on events and to see if I received any e-mails from the Communications Department. After this, I would talk with my supervisor to see which of the above tasks I would be performing that day. This usually would depend on which event was coming up. During my shifts, I always monitored the phone line to aid customers. At the end of each day, I would send an e-mail to the department updating them on what I had accomplished and what important information I needed to share from that day. Outside of my typical weekly schedule, I also worked about half of the UT men’s and women’s basketball games, as well as all of the concerts and events.
