Forefront Austin

Summer 2011 Site Reviews

Position: Intern
Student: Rhetoric & Writing Senior

My internship at Forefront Austin has been a great experience.  My duties included various writing related tasks like researching, editing, and writing for the monthly features.  For the most part I was researching topics for this past month’s issue and writing abstracts for the research I did.  I also edited client submitted content, making the articles easier to read and easier to market towards our audience.  On the business side of internship, I researched businesses that might be interested in partnering with Forefront and entered data into our online database about said businesses.

Forefront is an upstart company so the office is not a “typical” office environment.  There are ten employees and instead of having cubicles, we do our work in an open room with desks set up in circles.  This made it much easier for me to receive feedback on my work from my supervisors.  It is never quiet at the Forefront office because everybody is generally working together on articles and sales pitches.

I had great supervision from Anita Erickson, Abby Sandlin, and Jill Weir throughout the internship and really learned a lot about the business and how I improved as a communicator.  I had never worked in an office before (other than my father’s) and found it much easier than I thought.  I wasn’t confined to a cubicle and I was able to do my work with the perfect amount of supervision from my colleagues.  I recommend this internship to any student interested in writing or business.
