Harper's Bazaar

Summer 2010 Site Review

Position: Marketing Intern
Student: Sociology Sophomore

A day in the life of a marketing intern at Harper’s Bazaar begins with a team meeting between the sales and marketing departments.  A lot can be learned during these meetings just by listening to each team member talk about what they’re working on and observing how the department interacts.  Interns rarely have the same daily schedule every day, as the projects tend to change day to day, making every day a new and exciting adventure.  The assignments given to marketing interns are all important in putting the magazine together, no matter how small the task may seem, and its incredibly exciting when something you helped to create appears on the pages of the next issue.  Typical responsibilities include but are not limited to: writing marketing proposals for various advertising clients, creating sell sheets to be used by the sales department during sales calls with advertisers, proofreading materials sent to clients, sending media packages or clothing items via messenger arranging and sending large mailings, binding packets, copying and faxing.  Interns are given many opportunities to contribute to team brainstorming sessions during marketing team meetings.  Additionally, once a week interns are lucky enough to sit down for a presentation from one member of the sales or marketing teams.  Each presenter talks about a specific aspect of the fashion magazine industry and how Bazaar fits in.  Occasionally, the interns are given a very personal, in-depth look in the presenter’s career and receive valuable advice on breaking into the industry.  No matter how small a task may seem initially, at the end of the internship, each intern walks away with an incredibly rewarding and unforgettable experience.
