Hyde Park Counseling Center

Fall 2011

Student: Sociology Junior
Position: Counseling Center Intern

In the fall of 2011 I was an Intern at Hyde Park Counseling Center. Hyde Park Counseling Center is a center with three licensed professional counselors, a licensed psychologist, and two licensed professional counselor interns. The heart of the center is to offer biblically based solutions to problems in a caring, confidential, professional setting and to equip laypersons with skills to minister to others. They also offer specialized counseling services, psychological assessments, and consulting services. They made my hours flexible with my school schedule, I worked long days on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 12-6:30, but this really allowed me to grasp the daily life of a counselor.

I had a sufficient amount of responsibilities that include greeting clients, checking them in for session, processing payments. Answering phones, scheduling appointments, preparing charts for appointments, and reminder calls for appointments. Later in the semester and with training I was able to take intake calls, placing potential clients with specific counselors. I attended weekly staff meetings with the clinical team to discuss upcoming events, continuing professional development, team building and staffing. Also, I had the opportunity to meet with the Director of the center, Dr. Nicole Fitzpatrick, on a bi-weekly basis for one hour for supervision and mentoring. Toward the middle of the semester we had the annual conferences where I assisted with much preparation, event planning, processing registration payments, preparing registration packets, mailing brochures, and calling contacts to keep them updated on event. I attended the wonderful conference helping with the sound and power point presentations. The last couple weeks after the big event, I worked on and tweaked the Resource Manual to identify resources in the community to help our clients and those who call in to ask for resources- physical, emotional, and spiritual. Also, I tweaked and updated our marketing packet that we send out to churches to see if they would like our message to be brought to them.

I would highly recommend this internship if you are interested in any type of counseling. Hyde Park Counseling Center is so willing and generous to their interns, they want to teach you and equip you for what you would like to do for the future. They will challenge you with different but necessary jobs and they are such an inviting bunch welcoming you on the team.
